When PGPF’s leadership began laying plans for the Foundation’s first year, a unique opportunity emerged. Acclaimed filmmaker Patrick Creadon (Wordplay) had begun production on a documentary about the nation’s looming fiscal crisis, and the film prominently featured Dave Walker and The Concord Coalition’s bipartisan citizen engagement road show called the Fiscal Wake-Up Tour. Rather than simply invest in the documentary, PGPF acquired it and made it available to the greatest number of people possible. The film opened in over 300 theaters, followed by private showings on college campuses, in corporate media rooms and at community clubs.
For most Americans, the differences between the federal debt and deficit are mind-numbingly complex. I.O.U.S.A. not only explains these differences, but shows in clear and vivid detail how these growing problems will affect every American—especially today’s young people and the generations to follow. At the Omaha, Nebraska premiere, a distinguished panel including Warren Buffett and PGPF leaders discussed the issues and took questions from the audience. The film has prompted an overwhelmingly positive response from young and old alike. Some have offered to volunteer to spread its message; others tell us they plan to start saving more. Still others say the movie should be required viewing in all high schools and colleges.
